Metals Appendix to ECHA guidance on CSA
In the framework of the development of guidance for the drafting of the chemical safety assessment/report (CSA/CSR) under REACH, it was agreed with the European Commission that the metal-specific aspects of environmental risk assessment should be summarized in an annex to the guidance for developing the CSA/CSR document (Reach Implementation Project (RIP) 3.2). The challenge was to translate the MERAG science and further experience acquired during the discussions of the risk assessment reports prepared for metals (zinc, cadmium, nickel, copper, lead, antimony trioxide) under the Existing Substances Regulation (ESR) into a RIP format, so as to provide specific guidance that can be used by registrants under REACH when preparing their Chemical Safety Assessments for metals and metal compounds. To this end, a document was prepared by EURAS Consulting (B) (now ARCHE Consulting), the authors of the original MERAG files, and discussed with the Commission and Member States experts at several meetings of the EU Technical Committee on New and Existing Substances (TCNES). The final version was submitted and endorsed by the REACH Competent Authorities in June 2008.
It has been published as an Appendix to the ECHA Guidance ECHA Guidance on Information Requirements and Chemical Safety Assessment, and can be found on: http://echa.europa.eu/documents/10162/13632/information_requirements_r7_13_2_en.pdf)
It should be further updated to include further experience gained under REACH and on issues like sediments assessments in 2016.
